Arrival in Pahrump

We're here!  Above is the town of Pahrump, Nevada from the foothills of the Wilson Mt. Range that surround the Pahrump Valley.  The town of Pahrump is approx. 45,000 and we're at 2,500 ft.  This time of year, the mountains are snow capped, however it's begun to warm for spring here so the white peaks are fading.

Pahrump is in Nye County, the only county in Nevada where prostitution is legal.  The Chicken Ranch, featured in the movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" was filmed.  Yes, Dolly & the girls waved over the Pahrump Valley from level 2 of the ranch house!

Pahrump is about 1 hour from Las Vegas. Until 1961, there was no road to Las Vegas from the Pahrump Valley.  Telephone service was also not available until the '60's.  We are located 5 miles from the California border on Hwy 372.  If you are driving from Los Angeles on I-15 toward Las Vegas, you would take the Hwy. 372 cut off and avoid all of Vegas.

We arrived from Mexico and first stayed in a residential suite in Henderson.  We tromped around properties in Pahrump and found one within a few days.  We put in an offer then left for Portland to spend Christmas with he kids.  When we returned, we found that after one month in the bank's hands, they had "lost" our offer and nothing had progressed. We were not at all happy about that, and had already discussed that while we liked the house, we didn't love it.  With our realtor, we hit the market to search again and found the home that was perfect for us.  A couple of pieces of paper later, our old offer was cancelled and our offer on the new house had been accepted.

All totaled, we spent 7 weeks at the hotel suite.  We were very happy to be sprung from the small quarters where the 4 of us (counting the pooches) had been sequestered.  We had brought things from the storage unit in Pahrump containing our small utility trailer and all the belongings that we acquired while in Mexico, to the suite to make our stay more comfortable.  We discovered we couldn't move from the Suite to the new house in one car trip.

Knowing that we planned to buy a couch & loveseat from the local thrift store the minute we arrived and would have no way to haul it, we rented a 10' U-Haul to bring everything from Henderson.  "Over the Hump to Pahrump" we went in caravan on February 1st.

A large mess it was in what we're sure meant that the previous owners knew they were being forclosed, so just never again bothered to clean.  It's only been the last 2 days that we've been able to find time to do anything else but clean.

Jeff immediately constructed a fenced back yard for 'the Girls' who are very appreciative!  They haven't had the luxury of a fenced back yard for a year and a half.
